DESCRIPTION
CONCEPT AND PURPOSE
PolyShell is the result of a knowledge sprint, exploring how ultra-thin sheet materials with almost negligible inherent stiffness can be shaped into shell structures with large spans.
DIGITAL DESIGN AND FABRICATION
A range of digital tools has been used for the design and fabrication of the structure, which are increasingly becoming an integrated part of modern engineering and architectural practice.
These include parametric geometric modelling, optimisation algorithms and digital fabrication.
MATERIAL AND SPATIAL EXPERIENCE
The shell elements are made from 100% recycled polypropylene sheets, which are laser-cut and marked to allow them to be easily folded into rigid box elements.
To form the overall shell structure, the elements are connected using simple plastic rivets.
The geometry of the surface is designed to create an enclosing and intimate spatial experience in contrast to the large open volume of the Muziekgebouw hosting the exhibition.
The material modifies both light and acoustics within the space, thereby enhancing the spatial experience.
The pavilion was presented at IASS 2015.
